New Cartographies symposium in Rio de Janeiro

The New Cartographies project proposes to work mapping as a creative instrument of recognition, criticism and action on the urban territory. Sponsored by the Pró-Design program of the City of Rio de Janeiro, the project is currently developing partnerships and research on participative mapping that strives to go beyond mere physical representations of the territory, having the city of Rio de Janeiro as its main focus.

The New Cartographies symposium will take place at the Carioca Design Center on June 5th, 6th and 7th. Admission id free and there is no need to register in advance. The symposium will happen between 4pm and 9pm.

June 5, 2013

The first day of the New Cartographies symposium will have MAPPING AND PERCEPTION as main theme. Guests are academics / professionals who deal with multiple points of view about the individual experience in the urban space, using maps as interfaces and producing new types of visualization.

Participation of Christian Nold, Bruno Carvalho, Stephanie Rothenberg and Wellington Cançado, and Vitorio Benedetti as moderator.

The second day of the New Cartographies symposium will have MAPPING AND TRANSFORMATION as main theme. Guests are academics/professionals who use mapping as a design tool, generating visualizations for the understanding and transformation of realities.

Participation of Sergio Ferreira, Farès el-Dahdah, Alida Metcalf, Verena Andreatta, Luis Cajellas ans Felipe Correa, and Cristovão Duarte as moderator.

The third and last day of the New Cartographies symposium will have MAPPING AND POLITICS as main theme.Guests are academics / professionals who deal with the political aspects of mapping, debating cartograhy’s supposed neutrality and proposing other ways of thinking about territories visually so that new forms of social and political orders are reached.

Participation of Fabio Lopez, Natália Santos & Patrícia Azevedo, Beatriz Jaguaribe and Lize Mogel, and Ana Luiza Nobre as moderator.
